We just returned from the DR with one of the largest groups we’ve had to date! 38 volunteers which consisted of a large percentage of the staff from Fort Group Chartered Professional Accountants and Dr Brent, Dr Brian, Timo Gerzen a denturist from Steinbach, and a handful of Shine Dental staff and family.
The week was jam packed - the main project was building 2 houses for deserving families in the community. The first house was for Arleni, Edison and Arlison. The second house was for Mari, Carlos, Escarly and Jayden.
Besides home building, Aaron P, Aaron D, and Joseph from Fort Group taught a bookkeeping class at the community centre and Dr Brent, Timo and the rest of the dental team held clinics that provided new smiles for people from El Javillar and beyond!

The community also gathered for a church service and kid's bible classes, all hosted at the community centre. We also visited the Nest Of Love school where a few group members got the amazing opportunity to speak to the children they sponsor.
"Kitchen Encounters” were once again, a big hit as local families were provided with groceries followed by them showing members of the group how to prepare a traditional Dominican dish. The food, personal connection (and often… dance party!) that accompanied the encounters left the group feeling that it was one of the highlights of their time!
Every trip and group is unique, this one being marked by partners and employees of Fort Group working hard and playing hard together, growing as a team, getting to know each other and accomplishing something bigger than ourselves.
Aaron Pauls, a partner in the firm reflected, “We embarked on a trip to leave a positive impact on the El Javillar community yet came home even more impacted ourselves, with a new sense of community and teamwork." We can only imagine the excitement they have experienced in their workplace and word is, there may be more to join us next time!

As it seems we experience on every trip, we came to volunteer our time and build these families safe, dry homes but left having felt built up by their love, acceptance and sense of community. We won’t forget them!
