Every successive trip, we endeavour to improve on the previous trips. This trip allowed for the dental team to participate in the construction of two houses throughout the week, instead of simply at the end of the week. We were privileged to have been granted access to perform our dental duties in the 'comfort' of the hotel this trip! Although our backs and wrists were still compromised from poor ergonomics, the working environment was a delight and consistent power was a plus!
This trip was unique for Dr. Brent, as Wendy and his 2 sons had to sit this one out. Still, we managed to construct two beautiful homes for 2 extremely needy families, both with 2 children of their own. Much to the chagrin of the vacationing masses in Puerto Plata, we were blessed with ideal weather which consisted of copious amounts of cloud cover and the intermittent spattering of rain.
Although we were without an official medical contingency, pharmacist Jill and nurse Kathy, with the guidance of Dr. Kerrole, were able to put on a much needed medical clinic in the barrio of Ascension, while the rest of the gang volunteered at the feeding program. This trip was able to bless many people with suitcases and suitcases of donations that were collected from all over Canada.
Much work was accomplished and more laughter was heard as Canada shared a week and loads of love with those who could use it most.
